    About 10 or 12 years ago, we were heading to a family reunion on Possum Kingdom Lake. I was driving a diesel Ford Excursion pulling a travel trailer with a wave runner behind it. I planned on filling up as we got closer to the lake but there was no where t fill up on the rural route we took. There was a station at the campground we were staying at so I thought I would make it with the miles to empty. I ran out of diesel with the campground in sight and was able to coast to the diesel pumps with all I had in tow. That’ll never happen again.

    Don't believe the fuel miles remaining when driving I-10 west of San Antonio all the way to the California border. Head winds will get you every time. There are no external "tells" that you are driving in a steady 20mph headwind (no trees to blow around). Meanwhile the truck is burning fuel like you are going 80 mph. The only real indicator is the turbo boost gauge.

    We just did a cross country trip from NC to CA and back in our 6.0L Excursion. We have a rule to start looking for fuel at 1/2 a tank and we carry 10 gallons of diesel on the rack of the camper especially on Western trips. There are roads out there where there are no fuel stations for 150 miles (El Paso to Carlsbad US 62). Diesels do not like to run out of fuel and I know my truck could have $5000 damage easily. If a station does not accept my discount cards, I pay extra.

    The "remaining range" sensor on the Super Duty trucks must have been made by the same people who make black water tank level sensors. When I first got my F350, I thought I could make it home a couple of miles when it said I had 13 miles remaining. Ran out of fuel. Fortunately, Ford's roadside assistance came to the rescue. A couple of years later, got caught in Kansas while towing, and the towns and fuel stations were 50 miles apart. Started looking for a station that we could fit into when the range indicated was 100 miles. I found one when it indicated 20 miles remaining, the "low fuel pressure" alarm came on just as I got to the end of the freeway exit, and the engine died just as we made it to the pump. The P087 code is a transitory code, and clears after a few startup cycles.

    Same thing happened to me on a test drive of a brand-new truck! Back in January 2020, I test drove a 2019 F-350 Platinum DRW located at Greenway Ford in Orlando, Florida. The truck showed 20 miles until empty but stalled on a busy highway, Colonial Drive, directly across from the dealership. It was embarrassing because I was directing traffic around the disabled truck until someone from the dealership came to pick me up. The crazy thing is that I ended up getting a great deal, and I bought the truck! I now tell everyone I bought a brand-new truck that broke down on the test drive. My friends and family thought I lost my mind. I learned a valuable lesson from that experience, and as soon as the low fuel indicator comes on, I immediately fill up.

    This was hard to watch... I'll echo here what so many others have said, that wasn't good. Look up CP4 failures. It will take out the entire fuel system, easily leaving the owner with a $12k+ bill. As awesome as the PSD is, the CP4 is the bane of the PSD. Thankfully, the buckets in the 20+ CP4's are pinned, which solve one common problem with this pump, however, many of us also install DPK's. And better yet, now S&S has come out with a DCR complete replacement pump (recommended over the CPX). It sounds like besides this time, you have also run out of fuel and dry cranked your truck in the past... I would suggest taking it in and having a DCR put in, and the sooner the better. Most likely damage has already been done to your pump, and if so, some of that glitter has already made it's way through your system, which would mean it's just a matter of time before it fails, and a few gallons of fuel won't fix it. I love my 22 PSD, however, I learned as much as I could about it when I got it, and the first thing to note is that the fuel system leaves no room for error such as with these dry cranks, or letting them run empty. If it happens again, do not try to crank it without letting the system repressurize first at least half a dozen times. It's easy to do, just turn the key/push the button to ACC for about 30 seconds, then turn it back off. Then do it again... and again.... You can hear the pump running when you do it. After about 6 times, turn the engine over, but if it doesn't crank right up, stop and let the pump run a few more times. Good luck!

  • @Allthumbzzz
    @Allthumbzzz День назад

    Prime the system as others have said. Your doing no favors to your CP4 pump which is known to go bad from lack of lubricity. If CP4 goes it will take out your entire fuel system at a huge cost, over 10k. Look up CP4 failures.

  • @user-ev5zt9dy5x
    @user-ev5zt9dy5x День назад

    The Bosch CP4 doesn’t like two things, water and to be run dry of lubricating fuel. If I were you Chad I’d be concerned about the condition of the high pressure fuel pump. It’s time for a S&S DCR upgrade to protect the rest of your fuel system. Ford looks very hard at ways to get out of replacing the CP4 and related fuel system parts under warranty so I’d just bite the bullet and spend $3600 to upgrade the CP4 to eliminate future problems.

  • @ashtaris2965
    @ashtaris2965 День назад

    You should have just primed the fuel pump. Turn on the ignition, but don't start it. Wait about 15 to 30 seconds, turn it off, and repeat. Do this about 5 or 6 times and it should start with no problem.

    DTE is a calculated by the computer algorithm, it's not a real gauge. If your ever run dry again, just cycle the key on and off theres no need to crank. The pump is electric.

I have 2 Group 31 deep cycle Odyssey batteries. I’m looking at putting in a 4,000 watt inverter and wiring it into my generator wiring, coming off the power side of the generator going into the breaker box underneath the refrigerator. And then just flipping the breaker off for the converter when running off the inverter. Will that work. I’m just going to be using the inverter for the few 120V outlets and watch televisions at night when Boon docking at night. In the day time I will turn the generator on to run the air, conditioner, microwave, and Recharge, the batteries etc. Will that work? I’m new to this and I have no idea if that will work. What do you think?
